The first orthodontic evaluation can take place after the 6th year of age. That’s
approximately when the first permanent teeth erupt. There are many orthodontic and orthognathic problems, that can be prevented or treated during this age, like for example a narrow upper jaw or dental arch, which leads to lack of space for the permanent teeth, or to cross-bite or even to an asymmetrical growth of the lower jaw due to a malocclusion.
Even if there are no problems detected during the first examination, a frequent examination can be planned in order to detect a problem as soon as possible and treat it before it gets bigger.
Unfortunately there is a misconception that the first orthodontic evaluation is not needed before all permanent teeth erupt. This perception limits our choices within an orthodontic treatment and unfortunately we are being forced to apply methods, that are usually the last treatment choice of today’s orthodontics, like tooth extractions.
In any case, it has to be clear, that the right moment for an orthodontic treatment is not a recipe that is being applied to every single patient, but is an individual matter, that is being adapted and applied to the patient’s needs and wills. The orthodontist is the only one who can evaluate and determine, when is the right time for a treatment to start, in order to achieve the best result, in the shortest time possible, with the minimum cost and biological stress for the teeth and the patient.
