What are the kinds of an orthodontic treatment?

There are three main kinds of orthodontic treatment:

  • The preventative orthodontic therapy, during which the main goal is the retention of the current teeth position. Patients who lost a deciduous tooth (milk tooth) sooner than it was supposed to, are the best example for this kind of treatment. The goal is to keep the space open for the permanent tooth that follows. Candidates for this kind of treatment are also patients who already have a very nice straight smile and the only thing left to do is to make sure they will smile like this for the rest of their lives.
  • The early orthodontic treatment, which is indicated for patients with severe dental and skeletal problems, that were spotted in early age. Normally, this treatment lasts 1,5 to 2 years and its main goal is to improve the problem or even to solve it completely, in order to create better conditions to achieve the best treatment outcome during the reparative orthodontic therapy. The main treatment appliances are in most cases removable devices. (Hawley, Bionator, activator etc)
  • Reparative orthodontic treatment, during which every orthodontic problem is being corrected (skeletal and dental) and it usually has a duration of 3-4 years. This treatment includes a wide range of orthodontic appliances (removable appliances, braces, etc). This treatment has mainly 3 phases: The diagnosis, the active treatment and the retention and stability of the treatment outcome.
