What's orthodontics, the orthodontist and the orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. The orthodontist is responsible for the harmonic positioning and growth of the jaws, the harmonic positioning of the lips and for a beautiful smile. A specialist in this field is called an orthodontist. Orthodontists receive a 3-5 year further education beyond their five years in dental school.

The aim of an orthodontic treatment is the correction of the crooked teeth and jaws. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease, and cause asymetric stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain. Another important factor are the aesthetics. Teeth that are crooked or not in the right place can also detract from one’s appearance. A charming smile and a harmonic face is more attractive and a sign of good health.
